Customer Review: Gorgeous -- but very fragile

I've broken several of these while *carefully* hand-washing -- it is very easy to do. On the other hand, they are so delicate and gorgeous that drinking from them is a truly special event. The photo doesn't really do the bowl shape justice -- you know you are holding a special glass when you hold one of these. They are very lightweight and elegant, and the glass bowl slopes to an almost impossibly thin rim. The shape is beautiful. But be prepared to buy extras and break one from time to time. On occasion I have considered running these out and replacing with a different brand of sauternes/dessert glass(Schott Z., Orrefors)solely to reduce the inevitable replacement cost. But the other choices, while potentially sturdier, are noticeably less desirable in shape and bowl delicacy. In my view, the frailty is a large part of the beauty of dessert wine glasses.
Description of Riedel Sommeliers Sauternes Glass, Packed in a Single Gift Tube
This Riedel Sommeliers Sauternes glass was originally developed in 1989 in collaboration with Hardy Rodenstock, described by the Wine Spectator as 'the world's most extravagant wine collector'. It was first issued as a glass for dry white wine. Ironically enough, tastings around the world have subsequently shown it to be the ideal glass for Sauternes and sweet wines. The unusual curved design accentuates the apricot aromas typical of wines made from grapes affected by botrytis ('noble rot'). The glass is designed to emphasis acidity, thus baancing the wine's liquorous sweetness and luscious finish.Wine Glasses
